The system includes a standard transverse carriage assembly, a heavy duty motorized lift, a linear bearing slide, and the lower bevel unit. The lower bevel unit rides the plate on a stainless steel wheel, while the linear bearing transfers the machine’s motion to the lower unit, allowing it to move freely in the vertical axis while riding the plate. An “off the plate” switch is activated when the unit approaches the edge of the plate, which locks the linear bearing in place via a pneumatically operated clamp. In this manner the torches are prevented from dropping to the plate as the plate riding wheel leaves the end of the work piece.

The entire lower assembly may be manually turned 90º in either direction for longitudinal or butt cutting. Torch positioning is accomplished by adjustments on this assembly. Torch carriers on opposite sides of the lower frame are used to adjust the lateral positioning of the leading and lagging (bevel) torches. The angle of bevel is adjustable on the two bevel torches, the center torch is fixed. Locking levers allow for quick changes to each adjustment. The distance to the work piece is controlled by individual torch holders.
