Arcaloy 309L-15 is used primarily in the overlay of steel or to join stainless steel to carbon or low alloy steels. Best used out-of-position on DC current only.
Arcaloy 309L-15 is used for welding carbon and low alloy steels to stainless steels. This can be done provided the service temperature does not exceed about 700ºF (315º). Post weld heat treatment should only be taken with great care. Arcaloy 309L-15 can be used as the first layer of stainless steel on carbon or low alloy steel.

Arcaloy 309L-15 electrodes are used for welding carbon and low alloy steels to stainless steels provided the service temperature does not exceed about 700ºF (315ºC). If the joint is thick, the low alloy side should be buttered with 309L electrodes. PWHT only if required, and the joint made with Arcaloy 316LF5 or Arcaloy 308L electrodes. Arcaloy 309L-15 electrodes are used for the first layer of 308L cladding. They have been used to weld 304L when an increased chromium content will give increased corrosion resistance. The basic coating of Arcaloy 309L-15 gives the highest resistance to cracking and excellent vertical welding characteristics. It is therefore the choice for field welding.
