ESAB does business in the steel and other heavy industries as L-TEC Steel Industry Products Division. This division was formed in July 1985 by the purchase of Union Carbide Corporation's (UCC LINDE) welding, cutting and scarfing machine businesses including the associated distribution network, engineering and manufacturing facilities. Transferred to L-TEC were UCC's business obligations, trademarks, licenses patents and staff.
All hot scarfing machines and equipment are built to withstand severe operating conditions and ensure dependable service. L-TEC's hot scarfing machines are remotely controlled, "pass-through" type machines. They are designed for mounting on rails, transverse to the roll table, and can be retracted from the production line by the operator to facilitate servicing the machine. The mill provides smoke cleaning and slag removal facilities required for production operation.
A typical cold scarfing (70°F/21°C to 1400°F/760°C Steel Temperature) machine package as supplied by L-TEC includes not only the machine itself and its related auxiliaries, but also the benefit of more than 70 years of successful experience in every phase of mechanized scarfing to assist in planning, commissioning and maintaining the equipment. All machines and equipment are ruggedly built to ensure dependable service under severe operating conditions.
L-TEC scarfing machines, having individually selected scarfing units, can be used for "spot" scarfing random defects from the slab surface, or for "band pass" scarfing, to scarf individual bands along the length of the slab where defects are commonly located. These processes, developed by L-TEC, provide the means for reducing yield-loss, while still producing high quality product to meet the demands of today's competitive steel industry.
